My name is Brian Stuckert and I am a career officer in the Army.  My sister, Jamie, lives in Columbus where she is a manager at a locally-owned health food store, Peachtree Natural Foods.  In January of this year, I deployed to Afghanistan for a year.  I was fortunate to travel to Fort Benning to get outfitted with gear because it gave me an opportunity to visit my sister before departing.  My sister and several of her co-workers at Peachtree wanted to know what they could do to show their appreciation for the men and women of our Armed Forces.  We discussed the subject as I was stocking up on some travel supplies at their store.  It occurred to me that, while the basic needs of our service members are well met, it can be difficult to obtain specialty items like vitamins and other supplements in a place like Afghanistan.  Armed with this insight, my sister immediately got to work organizing a program that has come to be known as Supplements for Soldiers.  Within weeks, each Peachtree store began offering their customers the opportunity to purchase supplements selected for conditions that soldiers face in Afghanistan.   The company then donated time and money to package and ship the items.  Each customer attached a personal note to their gift.  On May 24, I received the first of many boxes.  I cannot begin to tell you what a blessing it was for me to have the opportunity to hand the items out to soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines all over the camp.  While the supplements themselves are much appreciated and hard to find in this environment, it was the personal note attached to each item that was most gratifying.  They brought more than one tear to the eye of an otherwise battle-hardened warrior.  No one here doubts the support and goodwill of our countrymen, but it is nice to be reminded once and a while of just how appreciative everyone back home truly is.  It is my understanding that Peachtree plans to continue doing this as long as they are able, or, God willing, until there is no longer a need.
